Medium: Painting oil on MDF panel in sculpture of English white oak, plaster, gold leaf, Italian marble base
A monstrance is a Catholic sculpture designed to hold the Host, displaying it as an object of reverence. I was inspired by these artworks and wanted to make a secular celebration of life, a pastoral symphony in visual form. Inspired by an instant vision, I saw several shapes, pictures of rural natural beauty, surrounding a central image and he decided to paint a series of miniatures all on one panel, segmented. A bee, a sheep, bread, a mackerel, a sparrow, a daisy, a fox, a cat and in the centre, oak leaves. The surround is cut from white oak, with a white marble base and spikes gilded with 23.5kt red gold. The artwork took a year to create and faced several technical challenges which I enjoy tackling. I designed the work so that it can stand on a shelf or tabletop, or the disc removed from the legs to be wall-hung like a painting.
