This painting is part of a collection of abstract paintings called the ‘JOY’ series that were produced primarily in 2011 but revisited in 2012 and 2018, adding two more pieces to the series (Joy IV and Presence). This is JOY number 1, the blueprint for this specific technique. As a starting point, I embraced the eastern philosophical concept that happiness originates within oneself, and that what appears as given by others, or subject to conditions, is nothing but a reflection of our inner reality. By means of contemplation, integration and embodied presence, one can purify the mind and peel off all external conditioning, layer after layer, in order to refine and reclaim his/her original essence of happiness. According to the Yoga tradition, every person has five bodies (kosha), each increasingly finer and subtler in density. The finest of these five bodies is Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body) which is experienced as joy and bliss. These pieces aim to evoke in the viewer a sense of infinity and endless possibilities. They are portals into one’s innermost subtle dimension.
